Our building dates from 1860 when built amongst the last of the New Town. We are Grade 2 Listed which means sadly we cannot install a lift and there's a LOT of stairs great if you are into exercise but not so great if you aren't able bodied. Our founder was Eliza who had spent her youth in Service from Large Estates to Hotels to private residences. She had vision and was ahead of her time when she converted our buildings from National Coal Board Offices in 1962 to an eclectic hotel with en suite facilities TVs etc ; one of the first to do so in Edinburgh.
All rooms in the hotel are en suite. All are individually decorated and furnished many with four poster beds. We strive to retain the original period features of the rooms whilst acknowledging the need for mod-cons such as flatscreen televisions. Please note that the hotel does not have a lift and rooms are over four floors. Please contact us before booking for availability of lower floor rooms if required. Also note all Standard Twin rooms are on the fourth floor.
We offer a range of facilities to ensure that our guests stay in comfort. These include a bar and lounge in which to unwind a baggage store ironing facilities and a lock up facility for bicycles. For our more business-minded guests there is internet access a photocopier and printer. For our younger guests we have cots and high chairs available. Please note that this is an old building and unfortunately we have no lift. Please see Accessibility Information section below for further details.

Mobility Description:
Sincerest apologies for any inconvenience but as we are Grade B Listed we are not allowed a lift. We have 4 floors with approximately 25 steps between floors and just 3 rooms on the ground level which means we have limited availability for those unable to climb many stairs and we would ask guests to ask at booking for lower floor rooms we do not wish anyone to be left disappointed.
