If you are looking for a relaxed and friendly home at the end of a long day walking Hadrians Wall; want a rural retreat where you can take a deep breath and unwind following a day out exploring this quiet but fascinating part of the world or are travelling between Scotland and England and need somewhere to rest for the night then the Abbey Bridge is the B&B for you. The Abbey Bridge was built in 1832 as a public house called the Black Bull although there had been a hostelry on the site of what was an important crossing of the River Irthing for at least a couple of centuries beforehand. The building is Grade II listed and made from the local sandstone under a slate roof. The rooms are warm well equipped and ensuite. The beds are comfortable and the nights so quite you may find it difficult to get up for breakfast. Breakfasts are leisurely and we serve locally produced product where possible with lots of choice for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. Many of our guests are walking the Hadrians Wall long distance footpath which is under a mile from Abbey Bridge. We now have a boot dryer and clothes drying facilities if the Cumbrian weather has been unfriendly. As we are rather remote we serve a set 3 course evening meal at 7pm - we require 24 hours notice if you would like to dine with us please. We also have a licensed bar that stocks beer cider wine and soft drinks.
The guest bedrooms are named after local castles and rivers. We have have six rooms and can accommodate guests requiring twin or double beds. All rooms are equipped with hair-dryers coloured TV clock radios and tea/coffee making equipment. A range of toiletries is supplied in the bathrooms.
Breakfast can be a traditional English breakfast with locally produced bacon Cumberland sausage and free range eggs cooked to request. A choice of cereals fruit juices yogurts toast marmalades jams fresh fruits and freshly brewed tea and coffee is always available. Dinner can be provided if prior notice is given. We serve simple homely food freshly cooked. We are very happy to cater for vegetarians and vegans. Abbey Bridge is not licensed but you are welcome to bring any drink with you.
