Situated just north of the pond green in the small downland village of East Dean The Star and Garter is an elegant flint and brick building of a style quite unique to this part of England. As a pub it has been offering food and drink to the locals and visitors for at least 300 years. Particularly convenient for Goodwood Racecourse which is just one mile from the village the pub is about seven miles from Chichester with its Festival Theatre muedieval cathedral Pallant House Gallery and Fishbourne Roman Palace. Cowdray Park Polo Club is 20 minutes to the north and Petworth House with its famous collection of JMW Turner paintings is half an hours drive across the downs. Arundel Castle is in easy reach to the east as are the blue flagged sandy beaches of West Wittering and picturesque Bosham to the south. Slightly further away to the west is the historic naval base of Portsmouth home of HMS Victory and the Mary Rose. Local real ales from the Arundel Brewery continental lagers and a fine wine list complement the wonderful menus. The brand new StarGrazing menu offers something a little different. Here you might choose a light meal such as king prawns in paprika and garlic or fresh local asparagus topped with an unctuous poached egg. Alternatively you might opt for a table laden with tempting dishes for your party to share which might include stunning seafood platters featuring freshly landed Selsey crab and lobster. Or you can go for the à la carte menu for a traditional 3 course lunch or dinner. Traditional roasts are served on Sundays. The attentive staff are always happy to advise on allergies and intolerances and the three talented chefs will whenever possible adapt their recipes to suit. Food is served in the inviting light and airy bar/restaurant which is well patronised by local customers or in good weather in the delightful courtyard garden and lawns beyond. This lovely little Downland village pub is waiting to welcome you.
Our comfortable thoughtfully appointed rooms are all en-suite with either a shower or a bath. Tea and coffee making facilities are provided and each room has a flat-screen television and free wi-fi access. Ironing facilities are available on request. Dogs are welcome in some rooms but please let us know when booking if you are intending to bring Fido! Three of the six rooms are directly across a lane from the main part of the pub so have the advantage of not being over the bar.
