IDEN is 2 miles due north of Rye with a current population of about 450 souls. It sits some 50 metres above Rye being the highest point around. The word IDEN is derived from DEN meaning a Danish settlement and I (or E ) describing a watery place. There are certainly a lot of ponds in the village! Established as a village earlier than the 10th century it was valued at 30 shillings (1.50) in the Domesday Book of 1089 AD. Iden Coach House is situated in the centre of this pretty Domesday village originally an old stable block and greenhouse - the building was used in the Second World War as a fire station and subsequently as a very superior centrally heated home for a vintage convertible Lagonda car. The present owners - Paul and Brenda - have sympathetically converted it into a comfortable five bedroom house complete with oak beams and floors. Iden Village is near enough to Rye - 2 miles - to enjoy the restaurants pubs and other facilities and then have a quiet nights sleep without the worry of parking or being woken in the early hours with late night revellers or seagulls at daybreak! The spacious en-suite rooms have their own front door off the driveway via an inner hall making it easy to come and go without disturbing us or other guests. You are given your own keys on arrival. Both our rooms are fully ensuite with easy chairs and door to the summer house and large interesting garden with ponds steam railway and hidden corners. A selection of herbal teas coffee and chocolate are available for you in your room. Fresh milk can be kept within the small refrigerator - for guests own use - in the inner hall. Handy also for that bottle of wine taken in the garden on a warm evening! Breakfasts are served between 8.00 and 9.00 o-clock in the oak beamed dining room via the inner hall. We offer you fresh melon grapefruit prunes and cereals to go with your English or Continental breakfast. Tea and ground coffee plus locally baked white and brown bread with specially produced jams and marmalade to finish. Hair dryer bottle opener wine glasses heater and extra blankets (if needed) are standard in both rooms Plus - of course - fresh towels and bedding! Iron and ironing board plus a Z bed to suit a child (minimum of 2 night stay at 15 per night) is available for either room. Please tell us if something is missing or not to your satisfaction - We can t put it right if we don t know! We are lucky to have both THE BELL INN (serves good food) and IDEN VILLAGE STORES (sells a wide range of produce including wines newspapers freshly baked bread etc) and ALL SAINTS Norman Church (for your spiritual needs!) The Village Hall Bowling Green and Recreation Ground with village cricket and children s swings makes this pretty village a wonderfull place to stay. The footpaths and lanes around Iden make exercise for us and our dogs a real pleasure. Horses and Tractors are the biggest problem! In spring the apple orchards are a mass of blossom.
