LOCATION:
Located at 414 metres above sea level, Lucignano dominates the Valdichiana valley and the road between Siena and Arezzo: its strategic position shaped the history of the Municipality and it was soon being fought over by bordering territories for its castle. The architecture of the Municipality is an incredible example of medieval town planning: the elliptical layout with concentric ring roads has remained unchanged over the centuries. The first settlements date back to the first century B.C., as confirmed by the archaeological finds from the Etruscan era, while the town’s current layout dates from the 13th century. Not to be missed are the three gates of S. Giusto, S. Giovanni and the Murata Gate, the sanctuary of the Madonna delle Querce and the churches of the Misericordia and the Collegiata. A land steeped in culture where ancient crafts have retained their fundamental importance even today: from the production, restoration and engraving of furniture to the production of ceramics, jewellery and the traditional stonework with Pietra Serena. The typical extra virgin olive oil and honey are delicious.
