LOCATION:
Piglio lies in the midst of abundant vineyards and age-old olive trees on the slopes of the Ernici Mountains, between the upper valley of the river Aniene and the Sacco Valley. The town is located on the “Cesanese Wine Route, named after the first wine in Lazio to be granted DOCG status (controlled designation of origin guaranteed). The wine is featured in numerous events, such as the “Grape Festival”, during the first weekend of October, and summer celebrations including “Borgo di vino”, “Notte rossa” and “Calice di stelle al castello alto”. The vineyards are also the starting point of nature trails for excursions to the mountains, where the highest peak, Monte Scalambra, is at an altitude of over 1,400 metres. The E1 path has been included in the European walking routes mapped out by Georg Faharbach known as “E-paths”. There is also a contemplative path dedicated to Pope John Paul II, who often used to come to the area for walks and moments of tranquillity. For cycling enthusiasts, there is a scenic cycle path that meanders for over 30 miles along the route of the old Rome-Fiuggi railway line. The urban centre of Piglio is dominated by the Colonna Castle, around which the medieval town developed. Other monuments include the Roman Villa, the Franciscan Convent of San Lorenzo, the Sanctuary of the Madonna of the Roses and the Church of San Rocco along the Via Francigena, which features a fresco of the Virgin and child by the Giotto school.
