Fiuggi, an ancient medieval town, was originally known by the name of Anticoli di Campagna. It was only given its present name in 1911, taken from the word “frugi”, the name for the luxuriant ferns that grow around the springs. Indeed, Fiuggi is one of the most important spas in Europe, its modern centre extending downstream through the woods of chestnut trees. Known since Roman times, the fame of the waters of Fiuggi began to grow in the Middle Ages during the papacy of Boniface VIII. In 1549, even Michelangelo put his faith in the beneficial effects of the oligomineral water to cure his kidney stones. In the oldest part of the city, various monuments can be visited, including the Chiesa di San Biagio containing a work by Cavalier D’Arpino, the Chiesa di Santo Stefano Protomartire, the Collegiata Di San Pietro Apostolo and the Chiesa di Santa Maria Del Colle. With its wealth of folklore and legends, Fiuggi is the home of one of the most original and ancient festivals, the “festa delle stuzze”. Based on a legend that dates back to 1298, this involves carrying huge burning logs from dawn until dusk to the cry of “long live Saint Bagio” in celebration of the city’s patron saint.
