LOCATION:
Genazzano is a medieval town in the Prenestini Mountains which, with its imperial villas and luxurious aristocratic houses, became a fief of the Colonna family. Giovanni de Carlonibus, known as Brancaleone, one of the thirteen Italian knights involved in the “challenge of Barletta”, also fought alongside the Colonna. The town is dominated by the majestic Colonna Castle, built in medieval times, which is now a venue for important exhibitions by contemporary artists. In addition to the castle, there are many other attractions worth seeing, including: San Biagio Gate, the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Good Counsel, the Roman aqueduct, the Bramante Nymphaeum, the Church of San Pio, Casa Brancaleone and Palazzo Apolloni. In 2012, Genazzano entered the Guinness Book of Records with its traditional “infiorata”, when the town square, an area of approximately 1,642.57m2, was entirely covered with flower petals. Thanks to its countryside rich in chestnut trees, olive groves and vineyards, Genazzano boasts three DOC wines and numerous dishes with recognised municipal denomination of origin, reserved for characteristic products made according to ancient traditions and recipes. For hiking enthusiasts, there are magical nature trails through valleys and forests to the neighbouring areas of Rocca di Cave and Capranica Prenestina. Genazzano offers a rich calendar of events with approximately 280 days of activities scheduled each year.
