LOCATION:
Cori is a monumental city with various legends concerning its origin. According to the historian Pliny, it was established by Dardanus, the founder of Troy, whereas Virgil attributes its origin to the kings of Alba Longa. Cori is surrounded by imposing Cyclopean, with a series of concentric inner walls that culminate at the acropolis. At the town’s highest point stand the Temple of Hercules, from the first century BC, and the remains of the Temple of Castor and Pollux. From Roman times, there is a well, the ‘Pozzo Dorico’, and a sturdy bridge, the ‘Ponte della Catena’, which crosses the moat surrounding the town. Also worth seeing is the Church of Santa Maria della Pietà, built over a pagan temple; the Church of the Annunziata, a national monument also known as the “Scrovegni Chapel of Southern Lazio”, which contains magnificent frescoes; and the fifteenth-century Santa Oliva complex, which houses the museum of the local area, with 35 centuries of history. Cori is an island of delights thanks to its DOC wines, Cori Rosso and Cori Bianco, its PDO extra virgin olive oil from the Pontine Hills, and its tasty genuine prosciuttos, with their aroma of freshly mowed hay, sage and rosemary. Events not to be missed include the flag throwers and the Latium Festival, an annual event featuring Folk Arts and Traditions, with artists participating from all parts of the world.
