LOCATION:
An ancient village nestled in the lush green hills of the Italian comune of Viterbo, sheltered by the Lake Vico Nature Reserve, Vetralla is a traditional stop on the Via Francigena, the medieval pilgrimage route stretching from Canterbury to Rome. Fleeing the in-fighting in Rome, Pope Eugene III moved to Vetralla in 1145 and it was from here that he announced the Second Crusade. Ownership of the land was subsequently contested by the popes and lords of Viterbo until 17 February 1432, when Pope Eugene IV finally gave the people of Vetralla the rights of ownership to the forest of Mount Fogliano and the surrounding woodland. This event is commemorated each year with the enchanting Sposalizio dell'Albero (or Marriage of the Tree) ceremony, during which the Mayor of Vetralla reaffirms the people's right to Mount Fogliano. Vetralla and its environs host a vast number of sacred places. Among those worthy of a visit are the 18th-century cathedral, or duomo, with the wooden statue of the Immaculate Virgin, to which various miracles have been attributed. The neighbouring valleys are home to many deeply spiritual convents and hermitages, such as the Regina Pacis Monastery, the Sant'Angelo Convent on Mount Fogliano and the San Girolamo Hermitage. Also of great historic and archaeological significance is the Rocky Necropolis of Norchia. For foodies, there are countless opportunities to sample the local food and wine, including festivals celebrating delicacies such as olive oil, porcini mushrooms and handmade pasta.
