LOCATION:
Lying on the slopes of a rocky cliff that dominates the upper valley of the river Aniene, the picturesque medieval town of Subiaco nestles inside the Regional Nature Park of Monti Simbruini. The territory was inhabited in ancient times by the Equi people and, starting from the IV century, by the Romans. It was under the rule of Rome that major water and architectural works and Nero’s majestic imperial villa were built, of which only a few ruins remain. The heart of the historic centre of Subiaco is Piazza Sant’Andrea, where the buildings of the Palazzo del Seminario, the Palazzo Comunale and the splendid Cattedrale di Sant’Andrea stand; the latter, together with the church of Santa Maria della Valle, the abbey of Santa Scolastica and the Palazzo Pio VII nella Rocca, forms part of one of the most beautiful neoclassical complexes in Italy. On the edge of the residential area stands the Rocca Abbaziale, an important medieval building that commands an enchanting view of the town and the Valle dell'Aniene. Among the numerous monuments worthy of special attention are the monasteries of Santa Scolastica and St Benedict, places with a wealth of art that marked the history of Benedictine monasticism. Immersed in the marvellous scenery of Monti Simbruini, the Monastery of Santa Scolastica is the most ancient Benedictine monastery in the world and houses an ancient library that preserves ancient codes, parchments and very early printed works. Not far away, perched on a rock wall, stands the monastery of St Benedict, or the Sacro Speco, the interior of which is a labyrinth of rooms, chapels and churches containing precious frescos. Subiaco is a perfect destination for those who love nature. During the spring and summer season, pleasurable walks can be enjoyed through beech and oak trees, or treks along the banks of the Aniene river or on the highest peaks of Monti Simbruini; while in autumn and winter, skiing and snowboarding can be practised at the ski resort of Monte Livata.
