LOCATION:
An ancient southern Lazio town, papal seat and the birthplace of no fewer than three pontiffs, Anagni is also renowned for the celebrated episode when Giacomo Sciarra Colonna slapped the face of Pope Boniface VIII. The town was built on the ancient site of Anagnina, the most important centre of the Hernici people, an area inhabited since pre-Roman times. Legend has it that the town, fortified by cyclopean walls, was one of the ancient settlements founded by the god Saturn. The town has kept its medieval charm intact, adorned by later important architectural features. Of great interest are the Romanesque church of Sant’Andrea, the Barnekow house from the medieval era, the Municipal building, an austere example of thirteenth century architecture, the splendid palace of Boniface VIII and the Cathedral, built on the site of the ancient acropolis, certainly one of the best examples of Romanesque architecture in the Region with its frescoed crypt. Even the local gastronomy is steeped in history: the typical dish is the Boniface VII Timbale, three different versions of which can be enjoyed. A historical pageant follows 10 days of celebrations in August, culminating in the ‘Palio dell’Annello’ or ring race.
