The historic village of Artena is perched in the foothills of the Lepini Mountains. Based on recent archaeological excavations and fortification walls, its founding dates to pre-Roman times, in the eighth century BC. . The picturesque town, built entirely on limestone, is an architectural journey in the history of Italy with Etruscan and Roman remains and subsequent Renaissance reconstruction. The village was dear to Papal families which left many religious buildings, among which the Collegiate Church of Santa Croce stands out; in 1600 the Borghese family built the San Marco or old post shelter, or the old post office, an ante litteram hotel for travellers on their way from Rome to Naples and vice versa, the Granaio (Granary) that now houses the Roger Lambrechts Archaeological Museum, Palazzo Borghese Palace, still a residence of the family and the monumental Borghese Arch, the main gate of the old town centre and the symbol of the village. Famous for brigandage, Garibaldi chose it as a refuge from Rome before leaving for Romagna. Artena can only be visited on foot or mule, by contacting a local cooperative. There are many must-see events including the Palio delle Contrade with an exhibition by the award-winning flag bearers of Artena.
