LOCATION:
Marostica lies at the foot of Altopiano di Asiago. Its fortifications and two castles stand as testimony to the rule of the Scaligeri, Lords of Verona, which endured for most of the fourteenth century. Marostica is famous throughout the world for its "living" chess games, held every two years in the town square, where the pieces are real people. The first was held in 1923 to commemorate an event in 1454 when two noble warriors challenged each other to a game of chess to win the hand of the woman they both loved. During the reconstruction, more than 550 figures in period costume parade through the town for two hours. The Castello Superiore must be seen with its evocative panorama, best appreciated at sunset, and the park with its lush vegetation of cedars, firs, pines and, above all, cypresses. Marostica can boast another record, that of producing the first cherry in Italy to gain European recognition through the IGP (Protected Geographical Status) certification. The delicious fruit can be tasted during the Sagra Mercato della Ciliegia (Cherry Festival Market) that is held every year from May to June. And for lovers of 19th century craftsmanship, Marostica was the leading producer and processor of straw, to the extent that the hats produced in its factories were marketed and renowned around the world.
