LOCATION:
At the foot of the Lessini mountains, the medieval city of Soave is entirely surrounded by walls with Ghibelline battlements and features a magnificent Castle that entirely dominates the entire city. The first human settlement dates back to the Stone Age, but the historic centre was not founded until the Lombard era, around 500. In the fourteenth century, under the rule of the Scaligeri, Soave grew in importance to the point that, in 1405, through the actions of the Gonzaga, it passed under the dominion of the Republic of Venice. The historic centre boasts a wealth of monuments including the Palazzo dei Conti Sambonifacio from the 13th century, the Palazzo dei Conti Cavalli and the Duomo di San Lorenzo. The Palazzo Pullici is not to be missed. It was here that the Italian patriot and writer Ippolito Nievo spent the early years of his childhood. A city steeped in history, Soave is also renowned for the famous white wine of the same name, Soave D.O.C.: the largest-scale production under the most significant label in the whole of the Veneto.
