Closer to home on Newcastles doorstep lies two contrasting Nature Reserves Rhos Fiddle to the west is a beautiful natural upland Moorland of some 70 acres and bog on a shale base that was formed over 400 million years ago designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The variety of habitats support a diversity of species including hare curlew snipe short-eared owl and mountain pansy whilst to the east lies Clunton Coppice an all season woodland that is dominated by sessile oak. Visit Gigrin Farm Red Kite Feeding Station at Rhayader and watch the red kites perform breathtaking feats of aerial piracy competing with buzzards and ravens for choice pickings. Gliding Hang Gliding Paragliding and balloon flights are very popular over the South Shropshire Hills primarily over the Longmynd views across the Shropshire landscape are even more spectacular from the air. Balloon launches take place from a number of places in the local area weather permitting.

Directions:
From Craven Arms head west on the Clun Road (B4368) heading towards Clun. Once in Clun take the left fork down the hill head south over the bridge then turn immediately right back onto the B4368. Passing the public car park on the right hand side follow the road for approx 3? miles the Crown is located on the right hand side just after entering the village.;
